Stretching is an important aspect of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  Tight and adaptively shortened muscles cause great imbalances in the normal functioning of the body movement and posture.  Muscles that are maintained at the proper and adequate length, allow for a better range of motion, blood flow, and normal function.  

Proper stretching on your own can be accomplished, but nothing is better than a professional pushing you outside of the limits you set for yourself.  You will find that your quality of life will improve greatly from performing stretching routinely.
