The Problem with the Spherical Earth Model

We have all seen the beautiful color pictures of our earth as it looks from space, the big spinning sphere in the vacuum of space, the place we all call home. This is the belief that we all have, that we are residing on a spinning ball, in a vast universe that exists among billions of other solar systems, galaxies and stars. We have all been taught from a very young age that this is the order of things and it all seems validated by agencies such as the National Space and Aeronautics Agency (NASA). Why wouldn’t we believe this? After all, isn’t there plenty of evidence that supports this model? We have watched the space program develop, through the eyes of the media, from the first primitive trip to the moon, to the shuttle program, the international space station, the Hubble telescope, the deep space satellites, the rover on Mars, and the list could go on for a very long time. We have seen the pictures of our home that were taken on our moon trips, doesn’t this prove that we are living on a globe? Unfortunately, there are probably only a few people on this earth that can know for sure if what we are being taught and shown is really the truth. Our human nature tends to direct us to follow the crowd and believe what everyone else accepts without really doing our own investigation. However, human nature is also engrained with the quest for knowledge and learning. I propose that we challenge this global spinning earth model by looking at some facts that do not align with what we are being taught. A problem arises when we cannot physically validate the truth; however, I shall bring forth arguments which demonstrate that we cannot possibly be living on a spinning sphere.

I will begin with a little background information on what our current accepted model entails. There seems to be a large volume of support for the global earth model, and many of us, including me, have immersed ourselves into these volumes. It would seem daunting for us to imagine ever challenging our century old belief in this matter. What we are expected to believe is that we are all living on a sphere that is spinning at 1,000 miles per hour, around a sun that is 93 million miles away, at a mere 60, 000 miles per hour around this sun. To add to this theory, we are also expected to believe that the earth, the sun and all our sister planets are being hurtled through the vacuum of space at a whopping 600,000 miles per hour.

While researching this topic, I discovered that all of our major religions have always embraced the idea of a flat earth. This belief was interrupted about a thousand years ago when a mathematician by the name of Nicolaus Copernicus theorized that the earth was actually a sphere. This mathematician was able to prove this theory based on equations and apparently was very convincing. Of course, a thousand years ago, technology did not exist that could prove or disprove his theory. The governments and the major religions began to pay attention and decided to adopt this theory as fact. Religion and churches at that time were extremely powerful and necessary to survival; their acceptance of this theory as fact ensured that the population of the earth would follow suit. Now a thousand years later, we are still perpetuating this belief even though we have the technology to prove or disprove it.

I will now present arguments that demonstrate that the earth cannot possibly be a sphere and is in fact flat and unmoving. The first fact I will present pertains to the spinning globe, spinning around the sun and speeding through space. If this were true, then we would expect the stars to be streaking across the sky each night, but they don’t. We would also expect to see a different set of stars each night as we traversed through the universe, but we don’t. The stars, constellations and yearly procession has been exactly the same for centuries; how is this possible if we are streaking through the universe? This demonstrates that the earth does not move and is not on a wild trajectory.

The second argument is based on very simple math. We are told that we live on a globe that has a 25,000-mile circumference. This implies that things we see in the distance horizon should at some point dip below our visible horizon. We can use a very simple formula to discover the rate at which the horizon should drop. Based on the information we are provided about the circumference; the horizon drops at 8” x Miles2. You would then expect, as an example, that an object 5 miles away from you would be almost 17 feet below your visible horizon. There are a multitude of examples that show objects seen in the distance should not be visible. The best example I found was that the Statue of Liberty can be seen in its entirety 36 miles away; this could not be possible given the information we have been taught.

A further argument is simply based on the accepted spin of the globe. We are taught that the earth spins at 1,000 miles per hour at the equator. Recently a man went up into the atmosphere using a helium balloon, in a space suit, to an altitude that took about 3 hours to reach. Focusing just on the time he took to ascend to this height; you would expect that the earth would have spun several thousand miles underneath him. However, he landed only about 15 miles from his original take off location. This could not be possible if we were on a spinning globe.

I will base my last argument again on the spinning globe model. This relates to aircraft and the amount of flight time that is encountered on these flights. It seems like very simple math, once again, that a flight that is going east at 500 miles per hour would never reach its destination if the globe is spinning the opposite direction at 1,000 miles per hour; in fact, it would go backwards. Take a minute and look at flight times from east to west and west to east for the same destinations. You will find that it takes the same amount of time both directions. With the globe spinning underneath the aircraft the flight to the east should take much longer. It is not possible to have the same flight time, in both directions, if we lived on a spinning globe.

This article would be tremendously longer if I were to discuss every example that disproves the spinning globe theory and supports the flat earth theory. I have only offered a few basic arguments that demonstrate that the earth must be flat and unmoving. Of course, these examples may not provide absolute proof that the earth is flat but it should certainly make you question what you have been led to believe. I challenge you to do your own research; you will discover, at a minimum, that you have not been told the whole truth.
